The Sixth Fleet is one of fourteen numbered fleets of the Federation Fleet, and is currently operating under the Core Sector Military Strategic Command. The Sixth Fleet is headquartered at Vigil's Point, Iskander. In 2297, it was transferred from the Strategic Command Center to the Core Sector Military Strategic Command after the Battle of Terra Neue. The Sixth Fleet's current objective is to "maintain order and peace throughout the core systems, and respond accordingly to threats elsewhere in Federation space."
The Sixth Fleet's current commander is Admiral Brett K. Skerritt, and it's current flagship is the Ulysses S. Grant.
History
The Sixth Fleet was activated in the Naval Mobilization Act of 2108, wherein Task Force 12, Task Force 72, Task Force 98, and the Martian Strategic Naval Command were formed together to make a Fleet-sized force. This was done in response to larger amounts of piracy in the outer systems, where the 2nd, 3rd, and 7th fleets were also mobilized.
The Sixth would later be stationed in the Arachnid Quarantine Zone, and carry out extensive operations within the vicinity of the Klethandu System during the First Bug War. During this period, the Sixth Fleet would be split into two halves; the Sixth Fleet would patrol the perimeter of the quarantine zone, and the Sixth Task Fleet would be assigned to a fire support role during the Battle of Klethandu and Battle of Planet P.
Structure
The Sixth Fleet is currently headquartered in the Central Naval Command Building in Vigil's Point, Iskander, and is a part of the Core Sector Military Strategic Command. It is currently one of three fleets assigned to the CSMSC, and is tasked with maintaining order within Federation-held space.
The Sixth Fleet comprises nine task forces, ranging in operational capacity and utility, numbered from 60 to 69. They cover all necessary functions for the fleet to operate in complete isolation from friendly forces for up to three months. Many of the task forces are currently tasked in handling separatist holdouts, providing home world security, or assisting in reconstruction efforts in Sol.
